Groton EMS is responsible for Emergency Medical Services and Rescue Operations and is staffed primarily by paid volunteers. The department serves Groton, Massachusetts, a rural community of approximately 10,000 residents, 30 miles northwest of Boston. The community is comprised of primarily residential and agricultural properties. Groton EMS consists of a Director, Assistant Director, 1 paid EMT and 25 On-Call EMTs and Rescue Technicians. Groton E.M.S. responded to 490 emergency calls in 2002. The department currently operates two Basic Life Support level ambulances, a Rescue Truck and Rescue Boat. Advance Life Support level care is provided by Medic-1 paramedics from Townsend, MA.. Rescue capabilities include: vehicle and machinery extrication, low-angle and low risk confined space, driver training (including ATV and watercraft) and surface water rescue and recovery. In addition, the department has two MASSARD certified Wilderness Airscent Search and Rescue Dogs trained in locating lost persons.
